Augusta teen airlifted from violent crash Sunday night

web posted October 16, 2006
WESTSIDE – Shortly after 9:30 pm Sunday Westside and Merriwether First Responders, along with Edgefield County EMS, were called to the scene of a second single car crash on Garrett Road this weekend. A 17 year-old Georgia teen was traveling east on Garrett Road when he lost control and flipped the Acura car he was driving, ejecting him some twenty yards away from the car.

Rescuers arrived to find the young man conscious but complaining of neck pain. As EMS arrived they called for a Life Flight helicopter to transport the injured teen. First Responders and EMS workers quickly immobilized the teen and transported him to a landing zone set up by the Merriwether Fire Department at the intersection of Garrett Road and Martintown Road.

The teen was unsure of where he was and did not know if he had anyone with him at the time of the crash. Firefighters used thermal imagining units to search the surrounding area for a possible second occupant, but could not locate one.

Debris was scattered across the roadway which included car parts, numerous papers and files, and pieces of the interior of the car. Firefighters began removing the debris to the side of the road in an effort to reopen the road. The South Carolina Highway Patrol arrived and assumed control of the investigation just after 10 pm.

This is the second wreck on Garrett Road this weekend and both happened within a half mile of each other near Penny Lane. Garrett Road, like Woodlawn Road, is well-traveled by those crossing over from Highway 28 and both are infamous for high speed violent wrecks. It is not known if speed was a factor in either of this weekend’s wrecks.
