Man run over by pick-up driven by grandfather

web posted November 28, 2007
WESTSIDE – An Edgefield County man was injured Monday night when his elderly grandfather ran over him with a pick-up truck while spreading fertilizer in a field near Walker Road and Highway 283 around 7 pm. An ambulance responding to the scene became stuck on the dirt road due to the rain on Monday and EMS personnel continued towards the scene on foot to provide first aid to the injured man.

According to information relayed from the scene the grandfather, who had a prosthetic leg, accidentally hit the accelerator when trying to apply the brake causing the truck to drive over his grandson who was said to be in his 40’s.

Westside Firemen and First Responders as well as Sheriff’s Deputies and State Troopers began arriving on the scene a short time later, some having difficulty in finding the exact location. EMS personnel requested First Responders with four-wheel drive vehicles to respond to the scene as well due to the muddy conditions.

James Turner, of JT’s Towing, who lives near the incident location came to the aid of the EMS unit and freed the ambulance from the mud while they treated the injured man.

Emergency personnel were on the scene for well over an hour before transporting the man to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, said to include a possible broken leg, fractured ribs, and assorted cuts and abrasions.
