Garrett Road closed after crash and collision
web
posted December 17, 2009
WESTSIDE – A quick
series of events left
two vehicles damaged, Garrett Road completely blocked, but fortunately
no one injured. The two crashes took place shortly after 6 pm Wednesday
as a Georgia Road resident was traveling west on Garrett Road towards
his home when he claimed a deer ran out in front of him, causing him to
swerve. That maneuver caused him to lose control of the Land Rover
Discovery he was driving causing it to go up an embankment.
After reaching the crest of the embankment the SUV struck at least two
trees before rolling down the near eight foot embankment and landing in
the middle of Garrett Road. When driver, who was wearing a seatbelt and
was uninjured in the crash, went to seek help another driver heading
eastbound rounded the curve.
The local woman
stated there were no lights on the crashed vehicle and
by the time she observed the overturned SUV she swerved to avoid a
collision, but struck the SUV with the front driver’s side front bumper
of the Ford Custom F100 pickup, causing moderate damage to the front
end. She continued a short distance and ended up in the ditch of the
eastbound lane.
“It was a black truck on a black road in the dark,” she said. “There
were no lights or nothing. I was lucky I saw it when I did.” She was
also uninjured and was restrained in her truck.
Westside and
Merriwether Fire Departments, EMS, Sheriff’s Deputies, and
the State Highway Patrol responded to the scene. Fire crews blocked all
traffic on the road to the west and on the east at Martintown Road.
No one was transported by EMS, though the father of the young man
driving the Land Rover stated on the scene they were going to take
their son to be checked out at a hospital for precautions of possible
unknown injuries.
The Land Rover was considered to be a total loss in the crash and was
towed from the scene. The Ford pickup was driven away from the scene by
the owner.
Attempts to locate an injured or dead deer on the scene were
unsuccessful.
Garrett Road was reopened for traffic just before 9 pm after the scene
was cleared.
