Tech Tips

Windows Download: Cleanup your desktop without loosing icons

By James Wise
web posted March 9, 2009
TECH TIPS – I can’t stand a cluttered desktop. It seems just like a disorganized, messy desk to me which I also can’t take. It can also make it difficult to find things therefore reducing productivity. However, sometimes it can be useful to have files/shortcuts on your desktop. So, what can you do? There is a program I recently discovered called Fences which might be the answer.

Fences (http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/) runs in the background and can hide all your icons with a single double click on the desktop. It can also help you organize your icons. For example, I have various active projects at any point in time. I setup “fences” for icons related to each project. A fence is really just a group of icons on your desktop but the fences program keeps them together and labels them (it’s even possible to scroll in a group).

An important tip: To create a new “fence” hold down the RIGHT mouse button and draw a box on the desktop (by dragging the mouse with the button held). When you release the mouse, you’ll have an option to create a new fence. If you do this in a section of the desktop with icons, the program will put those icons in your fence.

See a video of Fences in action at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSTnuRSKymw
