WISE TECH TIPS – A computer mouse is a
wonderful thing but sometimes things can be done more quickly using a
keyboard. Today, we’ll talk about some keyboard shortcuts that might
save you time. These shortcuts can also help in case of problems where
your mouse stops working.
Here are some of the keyboard shortcuts I use most often. This list
does not cover ALL shortcuts. I’ve highlighted the ones I use most
frequently in red.
Windows
• Switch
between running programs = ALT+TAB (hold down ALT and then press TAB to
view the task-switching window) CTRL+TAB is a related keyboard shortcut
used to switch between open tabs in Firefox/Internet Explorer.
• Opens Windows Task Manager = CTRL+SHIFT+ESC
• Open Start Menu = CTRL+ESC or Windows Key. Once
opened, you can hit TAB to move to the quick launch bar or TAB again to
move to the task bar (you can use the arrow keys to move around and
enter to select something)
• Left Mouse Click = Enter
• Right Mouse Click = SHIFT+F10
• Open properties for the selected object = ALT+ENTER
• Copy a file when dragging between folders (instead
of moving it) = Hold CTRL while dragging file to new folder then
release the mouse button
• Create a shortcut to a file = Hold ALT and drag it
to the desired location (such as the desktop).
• Open Windows Run Command Box = Windows Key + R
• Delete an item permanently (if you don’t want it to
go to the recycle bin first) = SHIFT+DEL
• Show Desktop = Windows Key + D
• Open Windows Explorer = Windows Key + E
• Lock the computer = Windows Key + L (use
CTRL+ALT+DELETE afterwards to unlock it)
General
• Cancel = ESC
• Move between items (i.e. fields in a data entry
form) = TAB (SHIFT+TAB moves backwards). Use the SPACE bar to
check/uncheck checkboxes in a data entry form
• Opens a drop-down list box = ALT+DOWN ARROW
• Switch between multiple windows in the same program
(for example, when the Notepad Find dialog box is displayed, ALT+F6
switches between the Find dialog box and the main Notepad window) =
ALT+F6
• Access the menu bar within a program = ALT or F10
(afterwards, use the arrow keys to move around and enter to select
something). To access a menu item more quickly, use ALT+Underlined
Letter (e.g. ALT+V in Word will open the “view” menu)
• Select all =
CTRL+A
• Select text = Move to first or last letter and hold
shift and arrow over (use can also use shift + end or home to select an
entire line
• Select multiple consecutive items (like multiple
files) = Click on first file, hold shift, click on last file
• Select multiple non-consecutive items (like
multiple files) = Click on first file, hold CTRL, click on each
additional file
• Copy selected
text to clipboard (or file, folder, etc…) = CTRL+C
•
Cut selected item (same as copy but it also removes the item from where
it was) = CTRL+X
•
Paste text from clipboard (or file, folder, etc…) = CTRL+V
• Exit Program = ALT+F4
•
Undo last action = CTRL+Z
• Rename selected file = F2
• Refresh = F5
Internet Explorer/Firefox
•
Open new tab = CTRL+T
•
Switch between open tabs = CTRL+TAB
• Switch to a certain open tab = CTRL+(1-9)
• Go to address bar = CTRL+L
• Go to search bar = CTRL+K
• Search for item in search box in a new tab =
ALT+ENTER
• Go back one page = Backspace
• Go forward one page (if you’ve gone backwards
earlier) = SHIFT+Backspace
Commonly Used by Various Programs
• Spell Check = F7
• Help = F1
• Make selected text bold = CTRL+B
• Make selected text italic = CTRL+I
• Make selected text underline = CTRL+U
• Find = CTRL + F
• Find Next = F3
Happy Keyboarding!
