Medical Transport Van Struck by Gravel Truck

web posted December 13, 2013

WESTSIDE A Medical Transport van taking a patient to the Greenwood hospital for treatment was struck by a gravel truck around noon at the intersection of Martintown Road and Highway 23 west in front of the Westside Fire Department. The impact knocked the rear axle from underneath the medical transport van and spun it around before coming to a stop.

Though no injuries were reported, an EMS unit was called to the scene for the patient that was in transport at the time of the collision.

According to available information, the Medical Transport was traveling north on Martintown Road when it approached the intersection. The driver intended to cross Hwy 23 and continue on North Martintown Road towards Greenwood.

However, the driver took the right lane to the yield sign and was attempting to make a left turn when it was struck by the eastbound gravel truck. According to a witness, the impact spun the van around "in the air".

While the scene was being investigated, additional gravel trucks were also rounding the corner at speeds in excess of the speed limit, according to information provided from the scene.

The collision is being investigated by the Highway Patrol.
