Lacy commercial zoning request in Merriwether shot down by county council

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted May 4, 2005

Local developer Jay Lacy attended the Edgefield County Council meeting tonight, May 3, 2005, as council received the planning commission’s letter passing on the recommendation for a zoning change from residential to light commercial and then voted not to allow the change. The property, located at the intersection of Murrah Road and Martintown Road, was purchased by Lacy after the zoning of Merriwether was implemented years ago. His intention has always been to build a strip mall and other offices and now a grocery store.

Mr. Lacy’s request is not new, as Edgefield Daily.com reported he was refused the change two years ago. However, after getting the nod from the planning commission Lacy began starting work for his project and was not happy when the council voted unanimously not to allow the change.

“You are going against the planning commission” he told council. Lacy stated Merriwether wanted and needed his commercial project. Mr. Lenny Birt, who stood in opposition, said the community was not on board and was adamantly against opening up Martintown Road to such development which would “destroy Merriwether,” he said.

Mr. Lacy said Merriwether needed not only his development but the county should allow “LC1, LC2, and LC3,” referring to classifications of commercial development. Lacy warned council that Merriwether gets what they want and said council was against the community having a high school and that, “now there is Fox Creek( High School),” he said as he walked away picking up his blue prints, reports, and summary he had prepared to deliver.

Mr. Lacy may bring the request up once more in a year. If it is not approved at that time he is not allowed to ever ask for a zoning change again.
